Science

Science at Swanwick Primary SchoolWe want all of our children to recognise that Science is all around us. Our Reception children are encouraged to question the world around them and to explore and test materials in their learning landscape. The children explore the outdoor world using binoculars, magnifying glasses and bug pots. The changing of the seasons and weather, underpin the activities that our children are engaged in. If it is raining, the Recpetion children are outside in the puddles. When the sunnier days come, the children explore shadows and refraction. Adults called 'Early Learning Friends' scaffold your child's learning, supporting the scientific language and vocabulary, challenging and discovering the world. In Reception, the staff carefully plan activities around the children's key interests. In the Spring term, the parents are invited to an animal Pooseum! Children have explored animal diets within this unit and had some animal visitors too! As the children progress into KS1 and 2, Science remains an essential part of our curriculum. Children follow the scheme 'Developing Experts' to understand key scientific concepts through practical and exciting lessons. Children are encouraged to think 'scientifically', predict, analyse and test. There is a strong focus on scientific vocabulary and discussion. This scheme is new to Swanwick Primary School, but has been created in collaboration with Experts in Key industries and alongside Teachers. The scheme gives children an idea of the careers they might choose and how these link to science. We also offer Forest Schools to our children. This is based in our Forest School Area and gives children the opportuntiy to learn key survival skills, in a safe environment. The children build dens, immerse themselves in nature and even cook S'mores over an open fire! You can find out more about our Progression of Skills, our Intent, implementation and Impact below. |
